Life rarely stands still. Careers change, incomes rise, families grow and priorities evolve – but our financial plans don’t always keep up.
The latest Essentially Wealth Q3 2026 highlights a simple but important message: regular financial reviews can make a significant difference to your long-term financial position.
Research featured in the publication found that almost a third of UK adults have experienced significant life changes over the past decade without updating their savings, pension or protection arrangements. Almost four in ten have also failed to increase their pension contributions following a pay rise.
There are also several important changes on the horizon.
From April 2027, pensions are set to be brought within the Inheritance Tax framework, prompting many people to reconsider how they plan to pass wealth on to the next generation. The publication highlights that delaying decisions could reduce the options available, particularly where wider estate planning or gifting strategies may take time to put in place.
For those considering their estate planning, life insurance could also have a role to play. Depending on individual circumstances, a policy can provide beneficiaries with a lump sum to help meet a future tax liability, potentially avoiding the need to sell property or other family assets.
Investment behaviour is also showing encouraging signs. Despite economic and political uncertainty, 30% of investors increased their portfolio contributions during the first quarter of 2026, with another 30% planning to invest more during the second quarter. Building long-term wealth was the main motivation for 44% of those increasing their investments.
The key isn’t necessarily reacting to every market headline, but maintaining a disciplined strategy that aligns with your objectives, timeframe and attitude to risk.
Whether it is reviewing your pension contributions, checking your ISA allowances, reassessing your savings, updating protection or simply making sure your investments still match your goals, small changes can add up over time.
The message from this quarter’s Essentially Wealth is clear: your financial plan should evolve as your life does. Taking the time to review it today could help you make the most of the opportunities available – and avoid being caught out by changes further down the line.
